J.Cole is currently in London on Drake’s ‘Light Dreams & Nightmares’ European tour and today during his interview with MTV, the rapper discussed a few topics such as his debut album, Drake’s many rumoured relationships, his favourite song on his upcoming album, and more.

J Cole on his struggle when he first moved to New York to pursue a record deal:

The main thing is, after college how broke I was, you know for like that 2 year period of trying to get a deal and not being able to pay my rent, my landlord let me build up a huuuge debt. I never even told anyone this story but my landlord basically let me build up thousands of dollars worth of debt, just because he believed in me and knew my story. And as soon as I got my deal I sure enough just paid him right off, you know that was like the hardest part, being super broke.

On how he became such a great lyricist:

Rickie: A lot of people are saying that you’re very good with your word play, do you think you need to be an academic of sorts to be like that?

Cole: I went to college and graduated but I don’t think it really has anything to do with it because you’ve got incredible lyricists that didn’t even graduate high school so I don’t think education…it definitely helps but I don’t think that it’s just that. I think it comes from me telling myself that, that’s what I wanted to do and studying the guys that did it, the Jay Z’s, the Nas’s and just trying to uphold that standard.

On his favourite song on his upcoming album:

Cole: Danger Hands produced it

Rickie: What’s it called?

Cole: Ah man I haven’t titled it yet, I have a rough title but…

Rickie: Give us the rough title man, an MTV News exclusive

Cole: Ah man I cant because if I change it it’ll ruin the moment, but the exclusive is, that I think it’ll win a Grammy.

About his tour mate Drake’s many rumoured relationships:

Rickie: There’s always rumours about him being in relationships, with Niki Minaj for example, can you shed any light on that for us?

Cole: Yeah everything’s true, everything you hear is true, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj…Michelle Obama, it’s all true. I hope that doesn’t get me in trouble with the president by the way.
