Wyclef Jean says he is not abandoning his presidential bid just yet and will send a lawyer to a Haitian court to appeal a decision rejecting his candidacy.

Speaking to The Associated Press from his home in Croix des Bouquets, Jean says lawyers will go to a Haitian court Monday to appeal with the national electoral dispute office.

Jean told the AP on Sunday that he has a document “which shows everything is correct” and that he and his aides “feel that what is going on here has everything to do with Haitian politics.”

Jean’s candidacy was rejected by the country’s elections board Friday night, presumably because he did not meet residency requirements

Hip hop star Wyclef Jean is not on the list of approved candidates for Haiti’s presidential election, it is reported.

The committee requires candidates to have spent the last five consecutive years living in Haiti.

Jean, who said he had received death threats this week, lives and works in the US.

The musician had always said his appointment as a roving ambassador by President Rene Preval in 2007 exempted him from the residency requirement.

The provisional electoral council is due to formally publish the list of approved candidates on Friday.

Do you think Wyclef should be approved or is it the right decision?

Wyclef Jean officially registered as a candidate for Haiti’s November presidential election.

I would like to tell (U.S.) President Barack Obama that the United States has Obama and Haiti has Wyclef Jean,”

The three-time Grammy award-winner told cheering supporters in a downtown area of Port-au-Prince.

In related news Sean Penn has spoken out about Wyclef Jean’s intention to run for President of Haiti.

This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it, simply because he, as an ambassador at large, has been virtually silent. For those of us in Haiti, he has been a non-presence. I’m not accusing Wyclef Jean of being an opportunist; I don’t know the man,” Sean added. “One of the reasons I don’t know very much about Wyclef Jean is that I haven’t seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti.” Sean told CNN(via USA Today).

Wyclef responded on ‘The Gayle King’ Show today, saying,

He hasn’t seen me for six months – I have been going to Haiti for more than five years. When the hurricane toppled Haiti, I was the first one there….if I did not create Yele Haiti to start stopping the violence, even him coming to Haiti would not have been possible today.”

Jean told TIME he is going to announce his candidacy for the Nov. 28 election just days before the Aug. 7 deadline

If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this,” Jean says. “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century. If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as President, then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.”

The ex-Fugees star is not ruling out running for presidency of Haiti.

Wyclef may reprtedly seek a five-year term as leader of the earthquake-ravaged nation.

It has long been speculated that the Haitian-born entertainer might enter the 2010 presidential contest, ever since President Rene Preval appointed him ambassador-at-large for the Caribbean nation in 2007

His family released the following statement today:

Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward. At this time, Wyclef Jean has not announced his intent to run for Haitian president. If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.”
