Shutter Island the R-rated thriller, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, sold an estimated $40.2 million in tickets in the US this weekend, according to Hollywood.com.
Both Scorsese and DiCaprio have never had an opening this big. The previous for Scorsese was ‘The Departed’ also starring DiCaprio,which sold $27 million over its first three days in 2006. Leonardo’s previous record was the 2002 comedic drama ‘Catch Me if You Can,’ which had a $30 million opening weekend.
‘Shutter Island’ comes out March 12th in the UK.
